Tout a commencé en 2001, quand les différents acteurs furent amenés a se rencontrer. A l'époque, le hip hop comptait déja parmi les styles prisés par la jeunesse malgache, avec de nombreux talents émergents et une forte influence des courants français et américains. Le reggae souffrait alors d'une relativement mauvaise image : un musique jouée par de jeunes drogués, au message pauvre, et un style n'ayant pas évolué depuis les années 70 (les icônes de cette musique a Madagascar étaient Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Alpha Blondy et Lucky Dube, comme si reine ne s'était passé sur la scene reggae internationale depuis le milieu des années 80 !). En 2001, 'Sound System' ne faisiat pas partie du vocabulaire de la jeunesse malgache. 7 ans plus tard, les choses ont évoluées. Comme dans n'importe quel autre pays du Monde, le dancehall a aujourd'hui une place prépondérante dans les gouts des jeunes malgaches. Et les artistes du ONE LOVA furent parmi les précurseurs de ces nouvelles tendances.
The < One Lova story > started in year 2001, when all the people involved got in touch with each other.
At the time hip hop was already big in Madagascar, with emerging local talents and a strong influence from French and American rap music. Reggae was then suffering from a pretty bad image : a music played by "intoxicated" dreadlocks, in the way it was played in the 70s (reggae heroes in Madagascar were Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Alpha Blondy and Lucky Dube, just as if nothing has happened on the reggae scene since the mid-80s!), with very little lyrical content. In 2001, the word "sound system" was totally unknown by the Malagasy youth. 7 years later, things have been dramatically changing. Just as in any other place of the world, dancehall music (i.e. ragamuffin) has tremendously developed in Madagascar. And the artists from the One Lova Crew were amongst the first to initiate this new trend.
En 2001, deux français fraîchement débarqués a Madagascar commencent a communiquer par le biais de la radio les nouvelles tendances et stars de la musique reggae. DJ I-Thai et Selector Rootikal créent alors le défunt King's Tany Sound System, qui commence a animer les boîtes de nuit d'Antananarivo et diffuse une émission hebdomadaire de 60mn sur l'une des principales station FM de la capitale. Rootikal était déja a l'époque en contact avec la plupart des artistes hip hop de Tana. Et les productions reggae jamaicaines récentes eurent alors un grand impact sur ces artistes, qui continuerent a enregistrer des productions 100% rap au studio de Rootkal, mais commencerent progressivement a enregistrer des cuts a la saveur de plus en plus reggae / ragga. Travail et persévérance.le studio ouvre la voie a ses productions vers une diffusion nationale, grâce a un partenariat avec les studios MARS, le plus important éditeur malgache a l'époque (le piratage massif en vogue a Madagascar fait qu'aujourd'hui MARS a cessé toute activité de production et d'édition.pas assez rentable.). Ce fut la naissance du label, qui se choisit un nom en 2003 : One Lova (lova signifie héritage en malgache).
In 2001, two French guys, newcomers in Madagascar, started to be active on the radio in order to make Malagasy people aware of the new trends in reggae music. These two men, DJ I-Thai, and selector Rootikal, set up the late King's Tany Sound System which started to tour in Antananarivo night clubs and was broadcasted one hour a week on a local radio station. Rootikal was already at the time in touch with most of the hip hop artists in Antananarivo. And Jamaican reggae productions had a great impact on the artists, who kept developing rap productions in Rootikal's studio but started to produce also more and more recordings with a reggae / ragga flavour. The studio worked intensively and managed to reach access to a national distribution network, thanks to a partnership with Malagasy number one editor (at the time.piracy in the country has turned it bankrupt since then and it nowadays does not deal with editing and producing anymore) : MARS. This was the birth of a label, which chose its name, One Lova ("lova" means "heritage" in Malagasy language) in year 2003.
A l'époque, les artistes du label étaient SHAO BOANA (un acteur majeur du movement hip hop depuis le milieu des années 90), I Thai, MC Crotal (un jeune chanteur réunionnais) et MAKUA, le crew de Shao.
Depuis ce temps les changements sont intervenus, inévitables : I Thai est installé a Mahajanga, a 600km du crew, et le clan MAKUA a vécu quelques perturbations, certains de ses membres ayant quitté la Grande Île, d'autres ayant entrepris une carriere solo avec d'autres producteurs.
The artists implicated at the time were mainly Shao Boana (a major player in the hip hop scene since the mid 90s), I Thai, MC Crotal (a young singer from La Réunion Island) and MAKUA (Shao Boana's own crew).
In 2007, a few things have changed. I Thai moved to Mahajanga (North West of Madagascar) and started to be less and less implicated in the music business. The MAKUA crew experienced some drastic changes, with some of its member leaving the country or developing their own solo carriers.
Aujourd'hui, ONE LOVA peut etre fier de rassembler parmi les meilleurs talents dancehall de la Grande Ile : Shao Boana, MC Crotal, Maboto Tilahy a Mashmanjaka (a.k.a Fenöfagnahy), Name Six (le 'Little Bow Wow National' aiment a titrer les journaux, en raison de son jeune âge). Ces artistes ont partagé les scenes et les micros avec tous les ténors du mouvement hip hop / dancehall s'étant succédé a Madagascar ces 5 dernieres années : Sean Paul, Diam's, Positive Black Soul, Neg'Marrons, Busta Flex, Saian Supa Crew, Lord Kossity, Awadi.
Today, One Lova can be proud of gathering amongst the best dancehall talents in Madagascar : Shao Boana, MC Crotal, Maboto Tilahy & Mashmanjaka (a.k.a Fenöfagnahy), and Name 6 (newspapers use to call him "the local Little Bow Wow", due to his very young age). They've been sharing stages and mikes with all "top ranked" hip hop / dancehall dancehall stars that have been visiting Madagascar in the last 5 years : Sean Paul, Diam's, Positive Black Soul, Neg'Marrons, Busta Flex, Saian Supa Crew, Lord Kossity, Awadi.
Les artistes ONE LOVA sont encore plus efficaces sur scene que sur disque, tant en performance solo, qu'en show collectif. Ils peuvent se produire avec un backing band acoustique ou accompagnés par un DJ dans la tradition du sound system (nous ajoutons néanmoins, autant que faire se peut, un percussionniste et des instruments traditionnels a corde - valiha, marovany, kabosy, lokanga.- pour ajouter une note malgache a notre vibration dancehall.
All artists are successful (unfortunately not regarding sales, but considering the audience reaction when they appear on stage!) in solo performances but also when offering "collective" shows. They all can perform with a backing band or backed by a DJ (we nevertheless add when possible a djembe / congas player and some strings - valiha, marovany, kabosy, lokanga. - to get our own "Malagasy touch" to our dancehall vibes).
En show acoustique, les chanteurs sont accompagnés par : batterie, basse, percussions, claviers, guitare.un minimum de 5 musiciens, ainsi qu'un ingénieur du son. En sound system, 3 musiciens au maximum : le selector (deejay), un percussionniste et un instrument traditionnel a cordes.l'ingénieur du son accompagne encore la formation.
When dealing with "acoustic" music, the singers are backed by the following musicians : Drums, bass, percussions, keyboards, guitar. 5 people altogether, alongside a sound engineer.Performing in "sound systems", we're only talking about a maximum of 3 musicians : DJ, percussionist, strings player or additional percussionist. Once again, the band has to move alongside its own sound engineer.
Si chacun des artistes peut offrir une performance solo de qualité de plus de 90mn, nous apprécions tourner avec l'ensemble des chanteurs, ce qui permet de démontrer la diversité des styles, voix et talents a l'intérieur du crew, mais également d'offrir au public une prestation de plus de 3 heures de temps. Ainsi, le crew en tournée peut représenter de 5 a 12 personnes, en fonction des possibilités de nos hôtes.
Even though each of them can give the audience a quality 90mn show, we appreciate touring together and showing people the diversity of talents, styles and voices available within the crew. Therefore, when possible, touring with 5 singers is highly appreciable, and can afford us to perform for more than 3 hours. One Lova Crew can then be touring with 5 to 12 people, according to our guest possibilities.
